Bank holidays are much more than just days off. They're the perfect opportunity to give someone something truly unforgettable. It could be the gift of a surprise weekend away, a family escape, or a day of super fun thrill rides or musical festivals. You can place your trust in UK spring and summer (yes, really!) to provide all the rays you and your special someone need for all those perfect moments in 2025. From Easter to the end of summer, here are the most epic experiences across the UK to turn into memorable gifts — no wrapping paper required.

How many bank holidays are there in 2025 and when are they?

Planning ahead? You’ll be pleased to know that 2025 is packed with long weekends perfect for spontaneous getaways, staycations, and thoughtful travel gifts.

Here’s how England and Wales' eight bank holidays break down:

  • New Year's Day – Wednesday 1 January
  • Good Friday – Friday 18 April
  • Easter Monday – Monday 21 April
  • Early May Bank Holiday – Monday 5 May
  • Spring Bank Holiday – Monday 26 May
  • Summer Bank Holiday – Monday 25 August
  • Christmas Day – Thursday 25 December
  • Boxing Day – Friday 26 December

Ideal for: Early spring escapes, late-summer long weekends, or a festive December rail adventure.

Will the UK get an extra bank holiday for 80th VE Day?

Short answer: No.

Although 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the UK government has confirmed there won't be an additional bank holiday. Instead, celebrations will likely align with the Early May Bank Holiday (Monday 5 May) — so if you’re planning something meaningful, that’s your best moment to mark the occasion.

Why not gift someone a reflective rail journey through the countryside or to a historic city to honour the date?

Are there different bank holidays for Scotland?

Scotland does things a little differently (and we love them for it). In addition to the above, Scots also get:

  • 2 January – For those who need extra time to recover from Hogmanay
  • Summer Bank Holiday – Monday 4 August
  • St. Andrew’s Day (observed) – Monday 1 December

Ideal for: Highland summer rail rides, and celebrating national pride with a scenic journey.

Are there different bank holidays for Ireland?

Yes — and if you're looking across the Irish Sea for gifting inspiration, the Republic of Ireland follows its own holiday calendar. In 2025, it celebrates 10 public holidays, including:

  1. St. Brigid’s Day – Monday 3 February
  2. St. Patrick’s Day – Monday 17 March
  3. Easter Monday – Monday 21 April
  4. May Day – Monday 5 May
  5. June, August, and October Bank Holidays
  6. Christmas & St. Stephen’s Day – 25 & 26 December

Fun fact: St. Brigid’s Day only became a public holiday in 2023 — making it one of the newest reasons to give the gift of a getaway.

What is the purpose of a bank holiday?

Bank holidays were originally meant to give people a break from work — but in today’s world, they’ve become natural pauses in the year to celebrate, reconnect, and reset. That’s why they’re also a golden opportunity for gifting — especially travel.

Bank holiday weekends often line up with real-life milestones and moments where a thoughtful gift can go a long way. Think of it as built-in breathing space to celebrate the people you care about.

Here are just a few reasons why a bank holiday weekend is the perfect time to gift someone a rail journey:

  • Spring birthdays – March, April and May bank holidays are a great, summery time for outdoors and activity-based gifts.

  • Anniversaries – A long weekend is a ready-made romantic escape.

  • Exam relief – Perfect timing for gifting students a stress-free getaway after mocks, GCSEs, or uni deadlines.

  • Family time – Easter and late May bank holidays are ideal for family reunions, catch-ups or spontaneous adventures.

  • Farewells & new starts – Colleagues leaving jobs, friends moving cities, or anyone starting a new chapter.

  • Mother’s Day / Father’s Day follow-ups – Let them choose their own relaxing journey to enjoy during the next bank holiday.

  • Kick-off to summer – The May or August bank holidays are perfect for giving the gift of a staycation or a scenic train break.

  • Mini-moons & ‘just because’ getaways – For couples needing time away, or friends who’ve “just had a week.”

Top gifting tip: Gifting a TrainGift card means you’re not just giving travel — you’re giving someone a reason to pause, explore, and make the most of their time off. And with quick delivery and 2-year validity, it’s a no-brainer for any spontaneous (or last-minute) bank holiday surprise. Plus, if you're feeling generous, don't hesitate to pair your gift with a cheeky hotel treat on top. You'll get brownie points for the thoughtfulness... Trust us!
